25 per cent of sanctioned IPS posts vaccant in UP
More than 25% of sanctioned posts of IPS officers of Uttar Pradesh cadre are lying vacant, an RTI query has revealed.

As per the RTI reply, the total cadre strength of IPS officers in UP is 517 out of which only 386 ( less than 75%) posts are filled and 131 others (more than 25%) are vacant.

“I perceive this as the main cause of problems related to law and order in UP as due to this shortage of IPS officers, many officers have been given charges of more than one post who easily escape accountability on the pretext of being overburdened,” said social activist Urvashi Sharma who had filed the plea at the Lucknow based UP Police Headquarters.

The six-point application filed by Urvashi in April this year also sought caste-wise breakup of IPS officers of UP cadre posted at different locations. The reply further revealed that 73 (less than 19%) working IPS are from OBC community, 11 (less than 3%) are Muslims with 10 (less than 3 %) minorities other than Muslims. It further said that 246 out of 386 ( more than 63%) IPS officers are from Genera Category and 365 out of 386 (more than 94%) are Hindus.

“Clearly there is less representation of SC, OBC and Minorities  at UP top cop posts indicating complete failure of various government schemes of central and state government,” she added.
